The first thing I think of when I see a Honda Element is that it has the aerodynamics of a flying brick. A flying brick certainly has more wind resistance than a flying ball. All of that has nothing to do with the Element and it’s introduction into the compact crossover field of SUV’s in 2003. The idea was to design a vehicle appealing to a younger group of people, that gets good fuel economy. The Element is based on Honda’s Global Compact Platform and will be powered by a 2.4-liter, 160-horsepower, i-VTEC, 4-cylinder inline engine. The Element is available with front-wheel drive or Honda’s optional “Real Time” four-wheel drive system, a hydraulically-actuated system that operates only when front wheel slippage occurs.
From 2004 to 2006 the engine used in the Element is called the K24A4, 2.4 liter gasoline engine. The K series of engines was introduced in 2001. Equipped with DOHC [double overhead camshafts] and roller rocker arms to reduce internal friction. Making adequate power with 160 horsepower and 160 foot pounds of torque, this engine provided a tender balance of power and economy. Perfect for a college kid.
From 2007 on, the Element made use of the K24AB inline gasoline 4 cylinder engine. Also a 2.4 liter engine from the K family also. It was not introduced to the Element until 2007, even though it was in use in other Honda’s before 2007.
The Element is built on the Honda CVC chassis. Making it a front engine, front wheel drive, and/or all wheel drive vehicle. But it’s Honda’s version of a common front engine/front wheel drive setup. It’s called a transverse mounting system, where the engine and transmission are mounted sideways under the hood.
